The Art of Networking: Connecting the Dots Globally
In today’s digital age, knowing how to network is one of the most important skills for anyone in any line of business or stage of their career. Networking is defined by Merriam Webster dictionary as “the exchange of information or services among individuals, groups, or institutions; specifically : the cultivation of productive relationships for employment or business. These relationships can foster new business prospects, can be educational, and create new stronger partnerships.”
Although most people know the value of networking, they often do not employ the right tactics to network effectively. At Payoneer, it is our mission to help you grow your global network. We just came back from Affiliate Summit East and wanted to share some tips and tricks to help you and your company grow your network.
Always be Aware
The first and most important step to networking effectively starts right when you meet someone new. Whether you are attending a networking event, a tradeshow, a company party, or even a friend’s birthday party, it is always important to know that each new person you meet could potentially help you grow your network. That is why it is always important to keep your eyes and ears open and to make sure you introduce yourself to as many people as possible. You never know who could lead you to your next opportunity.
Actively Engage
When you are networking, you might feel inclined to launch into a sales pitch about what you do. Instead, think about ways to actively engage in conversation with another by asking them questions, and actively listening to what they say. This can help nurture a more genuine relationship. Actively engaging means more than just listening to what a person is saying. What really makes or breaks a person’s perception of your interest in the conversation is your body language. It is important to stand up straight and look alert to highlight your interest in what’s being said. Additionally, making eye contact with whoever is talking shows them your attention is completely focused on them. People love to talk about themselves and what they do. By simply listening and showing your interest, you’ll make them feel like you have a deeper connection.
Smile
Most people think the purpose of networking is to sell others on you or your company. However, networking is much more than just a robotic sales pitch. Along with your ability to actively listen and engage in conversation with others, don’t forget to smile. It is important to seem relatable and easy to talk to as that helps open doors that extend beyond the business at hand.
Follow-Up
Networking doesn’t end when the conversation stops. In fact, that is just the beginning of your new relationship. To continue to nurture this relationship, make sure to get their information. Whether it is their Linkedin, or their phone number, business email or other information, make sure you have a way to contact them again.
A day or so after meeting these individuals, make sure to reach out to them, letting them know how much you enjoyed meeting them or following up on something you offered to help them with. From there hopefully you will begin an ongoing conversation that can lead to further meet ups and help grow your professional relationship.
