1. Серед фрілансерів багато молодих спеціалістів, але «покоління бебі-буму» заробляє більше

Для молоді – покоління Z і мілленіалів – якість життя стає важливіше грошей. Вони шукають нові бізнес-можливості і складають більшу частину сьогоднішнього ринку фрілансу. У регіонах, що розвиваються, наприклад, Південно-Східної Азії, 82% працівників молодше 35 років, в той час як в Північній Америці до цієї вікової групи належить лише 47%. Майже п’ята частина опитаних нами фрілансерів молодше 25 років. З іншого боку, ми виявили, що фрілансери з покоління бебі-буму, тобто, ті, кому більше 55 років, заробляють в два рази більше своїх молодих колег.

І, зрозуміло, сучасні технології значно полегшують фрілансерам пошук нових клієнтів онлайн, спілкування з замовниками і отримання платежів – незалежно від місця розташування.

2. Диплом про вищу освіту не гарантує більш високу оплату

Чи означає наявність вищої освіти більш високий дохід? Не обов’язково. Вплив вищої освіти на дохід вельми сумнівний. Насправді, у 57% опитаних є ступінь бакалавра, а 19% фрілансерів по всьому світу мають лише диплом про середню освіту. Більш того, фрілансери, які закінчили тільки школу, отримують більше бакалаврів і лише трохи менше тих, у кого є ступінь магістра (або ще більш висока ступінь). Схоже, що компанії, які наймають фрілансерів, більше цікавляться їх навичками, ніж освітою.

Цікава деталь, яку ми виявили: жінки-фрілансери, як правило, мають більш високу академічну ступінь, ніж чоловіки. У 31% жінок (і лише 22% чоловіків) є диплом про вищу освіту.

З іншого боку, жінки заробляють більше за чоловіків в сферах маркетингу та веб-дизайну – ці сфери займають майже половину всього обсягу ринку фрілансу. Здається, фріланс-спільнота перебуває на шляху до рівної оплату праці.

As more and more people flock to independent work, freelancing is quickly becoming the preferred lifestyle choice for workers all over the world. Mostly led by younger generations, the freelance economy is continuing to grow at a staggering pace not only in developed countries but more so in emerging regions.

What’s the trigger behind freelancing’s growing popularity around the world? To better understand the trends impacting this global movement, Payoneer surveyed over 7,000 global freelancers from over 150 countries to learn more about their hourly rates, average income and skills. Survey respondents provided us with unique insights into what makes them successful, what rates they’re charging and how they operate.

Here, we’ll break down four takeaways from the report, bringing you the most updated industry insights as the global freelance market continues to roar.

1. The Freelance Scene is Young, but Boomers Earn More

A higher quality lifestyle is becoming more desirable over finances and younger generations like Gen-Zers and Millennials are eager to embrace fresh business opportunities, making them a vast majority of today’s global freelance workforce. In emerging markets such as Southeast Asia, 82% of workers are under the age of 35, compared to only 47% in North America. Nearly a fifth of freelancers we surveyed were under the age of 25. On the other hand, we found that freelancers over the age of 55 “boomers”, earn more than twice as much as their younger peers.

Not to mention, today’s top technologies make it easier for remote workers to search for gigs online, communicate with clients and get paid, no matter where they’re located.

2. Having a College Degree Does not Mean More Money

Does obtaining an advanced degree promise a higher income? Well, not so much. The impact of higher education on earnings is highly questionable. In fact, 57% of respondents hold a bachelor’s degree and 19% of global freelancers have only completed high school. Furthermore, freelancers whose highest level of education is high school earn more than those with a bachelor’s and only slightly less than those with post graduate degrees. Companies who seek to hire freelancers seem to care more about skills as opposed to education.

What’s even more interesting is how we discovered that female freelancers are more likely to hold a more advanced degree than men. 31% of women hold a post graduate degree, compared to 22% of men who hold the same.

3. Women’s Share of the Freelance Workforce is Emerging with Opportunities

Even though there’s still a significant gender gap in today’s workforce, women’s participation in the freelance industry has been slowly gaining momentum over the last few years. Currently, women’s overall workforce share in most countries is still lagging, but women are making strides in several fields such as translations, project management and administration. According to World Bank Data 2019, women make up 39% of the global freelance workforce, offering a huge untapped opportunity for more women to join the freelance revolution.

4. Freelancing Can Possibly Help Narrow the Gender Gap Worldwide

Till today, the gender pay gap remains a debated issue, especially within the freelance community. Our survey showed that the mean hourly rate of female freelancers is 84% of the mean hourly rate of male freelancers across all professional fields, giving hope to close the gender pay gap.

We found that in the fields of finance and project management, women’s mean hourly rate is 53% and men’s is 56%. In contrast, women earn more than men in fields like marketing and web design – fields that actually make up almost half of the total freelancer population.
