For anyone who has ever tried to pay an EU-based business, like an internet provider, phone company or bank, only to be told that they don’t accept your IBAN because you’re not based in the right country, you’ve been the victim of IBAN discrimination. To be perfectly clear, IBAN discrimination is illegal and has been since 2014, yet it continues to impact lots of people who are just trying to make a payment.
In an effort to put an end to IBAN discrimination, Payoneer has teamed up with other payments providers, including N26, Revolut and Klarna, to create Accept my IBAN, an easy to use portal for consumers to report cases of IBAN discrimination. Each case is passed directly to the European Commission and all relevant national authorities, giving them a clear picture of how widespread IBAN discrimination is throughout Europe.
Please note that it doesn’t matter which payments provider you use or how you make your payments; anyone can file a complaint through Accept my IBAN. Doing so removes the headache of trying to report IBAN discrimination to the European Commission on your own and ensures that the relevant people are aware of your claim.
Remember that IBAN discrimination is illegal and the country in which you are based should not be a barrier to making your payments. Together, we can help put an end to IBAN discrimination, ensuring that all payments can be processed efficiently, regardless of where that payment originates.
